Coal IndiaQ2 result

Coal India Q2 results: the state-owned miner reported a 53% year-on-year rise in consolidated net profit to ₹6,516 crore for the quarter ended September, the company announced on October 29.

Revenue from operations increased about 21% to ₹44,179 crore against ₹36,553 crore last year. The company also announced a second interim dividend of ₹10.25 per share for FY27, according to its results update.

Coal India net profit lifted by better realisations

Price increases accounted for most of the gains. According to Business Standard, average billing realisation increased 7% to ₹2,346 a tonne from ₹2,186. Realisation on coal sold under fuel supply agreements (FSA) also went up to ₹2,191 a tonne from ₹2,103.

Other income also helped, increasing 24% to ₹2,654 crore, mainly due to interest income from deposits. Total expenditure increased 17% to ₹38,398 crore. Employee costs went up 8% to ₹11,777 crore and contractual expenses rose 18% to ₹7,326 crore.

EBITDA grew 29% to ₹8,499 crore against ₹6,593 crore last year, and the EBITDA margin improved to 19.24% from 18.04%, according to Upstox. Profit before tax was ₹8,728.3 crore, around 46% higher than the previous year’s ₹5,992 crore.

Volumes grew at a slower pace than prices. Production rose 4% to 151 million tonnes (mt) during the quarter, while offtake reached 186 mt, Business Standard reported.

Monthly figures indicate that demand from major customers was steady. Coal supplies in September increased 12.5% to 61.20 mt from 54.40 mt, while supplies to the power sector rose 10.63% to 48.90 mt, according to Upstox.

Sequentially, profit declined about 26% from roughly ₹8,852 crore in the June quarter, while revenue decreased 4.5% from ₹46,255 crore. The monsoon usually hampers mining and dispatches.

Coal India dividend: record date and payout

Coal India is paying a dividend of ₹10.25 per equity share with a face value of ₹10. The company has fixed November 4, 2026, as the record date and will pay the dividend on or before November 27, 2026.

The payout keeps Coal India among the steadier dividend payers in the public sector, which matters both for income-focused investors and for the government, the company’s majority shareholder.

Net profit for the first half of FY27 rose 18% to ₹15,368 crore from ₹13,056 crore, and revenue from operations went up 14% to ₹90,434 crore. Capex during the half rose 27% to ₹7,966 crore, or 109% of the planned outlay, according to Upstox.

What the Coal India Q2 results mean for India Inc

As Coal India is the largest producer of coal in India, its prices and output affect costs for power, steel, cement and aluminium companies. Higher prices benefit the miner, but those industries may see increased costs.

The company plans to diversify its portfolio as well. A Singapore-based wholly owned subsidiary, CIL Global Pte Ltd, was incorporated in the first half of FY27 to pursue critical mineral assets overseas. In June, President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of India’s first commercial coal-to-ammonium nitrate project, a coal gasification venture of over ₹25,000 crore being built by Coal India’s joint venture with BHEL at Lakhanpur in Odisha.

Shares of Coal India ended 0.28% higher at ₹393.1 on the NSE on Thursday, before the Coal India Q2 results were announced. The stock has lost around 8% in the last month and is trading well below its 52-week high of ₹491.25, with a market capitalisation of about ₹2.42 lakh crore.

The results add to a strong season for metals and mining, after Hindustan Zinc reported a record Q2 profit. More quarterly earnings are tracked in our business news section.

Investors will now watch whether realisations can be sustained in the second half, when power consumption and dispatches usually increase. Progress on the gasification project and the critical minerals push will decide how far the miner can scale up beyond thermal coal. Full results are available in the company’s exchange filings on NSE.

Profit figures conflict across sources: Upstox/Indian PSU report consolidated net profit (attributable) of ₹6,516 crore, up 53% from ₹4,259 crore; Business Standard reports PAT of ₹6,547 crore, up 57% from ₹4,167 crore.
